Views of the Miracle

THE MEDELLIN MIRACLE... MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE SINCE THE BAD OLD DAYS

The underpinnings of this true miracle is INFRASTRUCTURE... clearing the worst slums and abandoned land, creating services for the disenfranchised in their barrios, and integrating them into the life of the city through a transportation network which is the newest, most modern, cleanest, least expensive to use, and most efficient in the world.

After the repression of the city by the Narco kingpins was finally suppressed... Escobar was killed in 1993... a phenomenon called the Medellin Miracle began and continues today... and there are plans well into the future.

Here is a sampling of fotos about the modern infrastructure of Medellin, a model for the world.

.

SANTA FE MALL.  Built on  an impossible hillside, this ultramodern commercial center serves as a true city within a city, a small town of retail, entertainment and restaurants at the end of the El Poblado Golden Mile. ONE of SIX NEW MALLS... three more under construction.

CHANGING ITS THEMED DECOR SEASONALLY IT IS A PLACE OF GREAT BEAUTY.  The Flower Fair Carpet of Flowers is here.

AN outdoor experience as well, Santa Fe Mall provides dramatic views of the city.

YES, a sliding roof arches over six stories of retail and another four below ground for parking.
SOME OF THE BEST OF THE OLD IS PRESERVED..  THIS warehouse near the old train station was preserved while tearing down the flop houses and brothels which filled the area now known as Parque de las Luces.  So was the Mansard style train terminal itself... now a museum and a location for cafes.

Bamboo-like POLES OF THE PARK OF LIGHT WITH THE EPM LIBRARY.... brilliant at night...

HEADQUARTERS OF THE BANK OF COLOMBIA

A masterpiece of modern design.

A look across Plaza Cisneros, former freight and marshalling yard for the railway.  Rebuilt ten years ago...

THE NEW CAMPUS of the UNIVERSITY of ANTIOQUIA, founded 1809.

Bridges and highways, some undergrounded, covered by parks along the river.

Plaza Mayor Convention and Exhibition Center
Another look at Alpujarra-Cisneros... the blocky bldgs are the City, State and Federal office buildings.  Medellin won the MOST INNOVATIVE CITY IN THE WORLD in 2013. .. granted by Citibank and the Wall Street Journal, coming in FIRST over NYC and Tel Aviv.

ANd the City won the LEE KWAN YEW SINGAPORE world city award for livability and progress in 2016... a model city for the world... from the worst to one of the best.

EStadio and Metro Line

BIBLIOTECA de ESPANA... some of the funding was given by Spain with the King and Queen coming for the ribbon cutting.  It is perched on a cliff overlooking the city.  The barrio, Santo Domingo used to be the most dangerous in the city.  Now it's a tourist destination.

THE ESSENCE OF THE MEDELLIN MIRACLE IS ITS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM.

    1. Larry, can I live in MED with 1,200 income p/m? My father was (he's been dead for decades) from MED. I speak fluent Spanish. I wrote a travel journal re my journeys to COL ten years ago; don't have the $$ to pay an editing service. I live in the toilet of the USA: Baltimore, MD. I'm worn out from paying so many bills, car maintenance, high food prices, etc. What kind of business can I run there? I can use computers but no clue how to fix them. I know it is hard for an expat to find work in COL companies and I sense that it's best to have your own small business. I do photograph fixing and editing and home videos fix/editing as well. Please reply asap. I may just walk out of my rental hovel, take the first jet to MED, and wonder WTF am I going to do now (ahora que voy hacer?).
