THE MEDELLIN MIRACLE... MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE SINCE THE BAD OLD DAYS After the repression of the city by the Narco kingpins was finally suppressed... Escobar was killed in 1993... a phenomenon called the Medellin Miracle began and continues today... and there are plans well into the future. The underpinnings of this true miracle is INFRASTRUCTURE... clearing the worst slums and abandoned land, creating services for the disenfranchised in their barrios, and integrating them into the life of the city through a transportation network which is the newest, most modern, cleanest, least expensive to use, and most efficient in the world. Here is a sampling of fotos about the modern infrastructure of Medellin, a model for the world.
SANTA FE MALL. Built on an impossible hillside, this ultramodern commercial center serves as a true city within a city, a small town of retail, entertainment and restaurants at the end of the El Poblado Golden Mile. ONE of SIX NEW MALLS... three more under c…
Praise continues for MEDELLIN...Yes, Huff POST, NY Times, National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Forbes... etc etc all Praising with great Praise, but.. my friends and family still won’t come. It can’t be the fault of beautiful and exciting Medellin...it must be me. I love this place and its folk so much that I’m a pest. I am incessantly sending the good news about Medellin to my friends and family. Visiting this December and /or January was a hot topic for some of my friends. But...no. Not this year. Who me? Depressed? Hey! I have a great life as a gringo in Medellin and I want to share a bit of it with my dearests. Is that so bad. Maybe it is if I’m a pest.
About visiting Medellin my expat buddy wrote, ”We have to excuse our brothers back in the U.S. They get their info from the wrong places most of the time. Some of my friends, even if I paid for the ticket, won't come here. It saddens me that I can't share my happiness with some of the people I car…
If you are so paranoid about using M and/or C in the US that it forces you to go outtta the country, change the laws back there. Doing M and /or C is not a reason for visiting Colombia. But you should know the laws anyway. Makes sense? So do the M and C laws here in Colombia. They're not based on poor science, prejudice, religious fanaticism, or outmoded protectionism vis-a-vis alcohol. Click here for article from Global Post- decriminalization... While we're at it, sexual tourism is a US FEDERAL CRIME--- a FELONY--- punishable by up to 30 years in the Federal Penitentiary of their choice. Click here for NOLO article on Sexual Tourism
In the US Federal Statutes a minor is anyone under the age of EIGHTEEN... no matter what the age of consent is in the country to which you have traveled.
From what I can tell the crime of Sexual Tourism is applicable if the main purpose for your trip is to use prostitutes. Take a chance? Is it worth it?
Health Care... Use US plan? medicare? local plan govt funded? Intl health plan corps? Going "naked"?
Kathleen Peddicord in helr newsletter sells a very good synopsis of medical care for US citizens abroad. See her "Live and Invest Overseas" newsetter/magazine.
MY HEALTH CARE......GRINGO AMIGOS here and interested persons outside of Colombia, I take several (lots of) medications and at EPS, socialized, subsidized health care, the month's supply is 2,400 COP, that's a dollar twenty in US dollars.... If the doctor adds a medicine to my list the price stays the same for the bag full of EXPENSIVE pharmaceuticals.. USA arm and two legs, here virtually free on a EPS health program. My recent 12 day hospital stay cost me $86 US.
I went naked... means no insurance at all---for a week's stay at Hosp Pablo Tobon Uribe in Barrio Robledo, voted one of the ten best in Latin America, for an ulcer complicated by other…
First of all, a tourist/visitor may enter the country of Colombia and stay usually up to three months simply on your US Passport. No visa required. This includes multiple in and outs, say a visit to Ecuador, or a quicky back to the states. The tourist mat renew his stay by going back to the states and then returning.
But then there are the longterm visas perhaps leading to Residency incl all the benefits of health care paid by the government mostly,
These visas must be obtained at a Consulate of Colombia in the US like in San Francisco or LA or NYC. Check the wb for Consulados near you.
MORE ON BOTH RENTISTA AND PENSIONADO VISAS... uh oh, if you are here as a tourist, do you have to do this back in the states??? I think so.
There are student Visas established by universities here and corporate visas for employees of US companies.
But here are two more available to most anyone.
